What Is Interceptive Orthodontics?
Also called Phase 1 orthodontics, interceptive care corrects skeletal or dental problems while the jaws are still growing—ages 6–10. Guided growth now can shorten or eliminate full braces later.
| Phase 1 (ages 6–10) | Phase 2 (ages 11–14) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Guide jaw growth, gain space | Fine-tune tooth alignment |
| Appliances | Palatal expander, partial braces | Full Braces / Aligners |
| Avg. Duration | 9–12 mo | 12–18 mo |

Space Maintainers & Palatal Expansion
Dr. Freelove uses 3-D scans (no gaggy impressions) and low-force turnkeys kids tolerate easily.
Growth & Development Monitoring
Digital 3-D models track millimeter-level changes every six months, allowing us to start treatment at the ideal time—not too early, not too late.
Age 7 Orthodontic Screening
Both the American Association of Orthodontists and the AAPD recommend an initial ortho evaluation at age 7. It’s quick, painless, and covered by Apple Health/PPO.
Apple Health Orthodontic Coverage
Apple Health covers interceptive appliances when medically necessary—severe crossbites, impacted canines, skeletally narrow jaws. We submit the pre-auth and 3-D scans for you.
Preventing Future Orthodontic Complications
Early expansion can reduce the need for extractions or jaw surgery later and often shortens Phase 2 braces by 6–12 months.
Working with Local Orthodontists
Dr. Freelove co-manages cases with top Sammamish orthodontists—seamlessly handing off Phase 2 once your child is ready.
